Fast facts
Gannett Co. is the nation's largest newspaper company. It publishes 85 U.S. daily newspapers, including USA Today, and nearly 900 non-daily publications. The company also owns TV stations.
Gannett in September 2008 bought an additional 10% stake in CareerBuilder for $135 million from Tribune Co. The acquisition gave Gannett a 50.8% controlling interest (up from 40.8%) in CareerBuilder, a job site. Tribune now owns 30.8% (down from 40.8%). McClatchy Co. continues to own 14.4% and Microsoft Corp. owns 4%.
In October 2007, Gannett and Tribune Co. formed a 50/50 joint venture, Metromix LLC, to expand a national network of local entertainment web sites under the Metromix brand. Metromix LLC was to focus on launching Metromix.com in the nation's top 30 markets plus other key metro areas. The venture is an outgrowth of the Metromix franchise that originated at Tribune Co.'s Chicago Tribune.
In 2007, Gannett bought Schedule Star, which operates HighSchoolSports.net, a digital content site serving the high school sports audience.
Gannett in August 2008 said it would cut about 1,000 newspaper jobs, representing about 3% of its newspaper staffing, amid slumping print revenue.
Gannett was founded by Frank E. Gannett and associates in 1906 and incorporated in 1923. The company went public in 1967. It is based in McLean, Va., near Washington, D.C.
