List of Top iPhone Apps Suggests Opportunities for Marketers

Games and Entertainment Apps Are iPhone's Top Sellers

The current tally of the most popular Apple iPhone applications shows that:
  • Consumers are willing to pay nominally for games and entertainment.
  • The most downloaded free apps cut across a spectrum, suggesting broad opportunities for advertisers.
Applications -- particularly iPhone applications -- are gaining traction among advertisers because the rich user experience delivers deep engagement, the new metric in the brave new world of mobile.

Moreover, the iPhone is poised to give advertisers a bigger field now. A recent ComScore study shows the handset has broken demographic barriers: While 43% of iPhone owners earned more than $100,000 annually, a lot of growth is coming from those earning less than the median household income. IPhone adoption since June 2008 grew 48% among those earning between $25,000 and $50,000 per year and by 46% among those earning between $25,000 and $75,000.

IPhone apps can be free and ad-supported or paid or fee-based. Here are the top apps in both categories, along with their developers, category and cost.

Prediction on the top apps of 2009:

1) iBailout (Finance): Keep track of the companies requesting loans and follow where the $700 billion is going. Note: This app has no oversight.

2) Energy IndepeDANCE (Games): You are an American consumer dancing to the beat of the oil companies. The dancefloor is slick.

3) Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (Entertainment): Republicans have transformed into giant robots and battle to reclaim Earth.

Comparatively cheap development costs combined with free distribution... It's amazing more companies aren't taking advantage of the platform.

I think there is better exposure now that they list the top paid and top free apps per category. I hope that in the future they can expand into sub-categories. Our sales went up once we took our two apps out of games and put them into education.
