NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- The best strategy for ad agencies in the recession is to anticipate and support their clients' likely desire to shift from brand-building to hard-sell advertising for the duration of the downturn. That's according to Nick Brien, speaking at Ad Age's Media Mavens Awards event. He's the CEO of Interpublic Group of Cos.' Mediabrands, a unit designed to coordinate that holding company's media assets, and was formerly CEO of Universal McCann, where he won wide recognition as a savvy corporate turnaround artist.

MINNEAPOLIS (AdAge.com) -- In "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving," Lucy never does let Charlie Brown kick the football. And Brooke Burke didn't let former football player Warren Sapp kick up his heels as the winner of "Dancing with the Stars," either, as the TV personality and mother of four won the ABC dancing competition. Both shows combined gave ABC the Nielsen competition in the ratings race for the ad-centric adult 18-49 demographic, as the network won with an overall 4.5/12 rating and share, well above Fox (3.6/10), CBS (3.2/9), NBC (2.8/7) and the CW (.4/1).

Starbucks Launches 'Project Red' Campaign

CHICAGO (AdAge.com) -- Starbucks is going Red. Amid projections that it won't see improved same-store sales until 2009, the coffee chain today launches a full-scale holiday promotion with Project Red including TV ads from new agency BBDO themed, "It's more than coffee." As part of the holiday push, Starbucks will divert five cents from every holiday beverage sold to fund African AIDS programs.
