Too soon, you are getting ahead of yourself. 4SQ is just getting started. Look at all of the partnership deals they have in place, its just amazing, big huge brands doing cool and interesting things. As for Walmart, its not cool, and its not interesting. Maybe most people don't have smartphones, or were too concerned about getting crushed to worry about checking in. Did you actually talk to anyone? And consider the value of the apps that leverage 4SQ data, that is going to be a huge factor as well. Once geo-fencing kicks in on phones, 4SQ is going to take off like a rocket. I bet you said the same thing about Twitter a few years ago ;-)

You nailed the issue with the following quote: "Generally speaking, consumers just have not learned fast enough how to utilize these tools to their benefit." The problem is that people don't know the benefit.

Foursquare is known to the early adopters as a fun game and social tool. After interest and business prospects died down, Foursquare has tried to recast itself around "deals". But it has not presented itself as a deal engine. Now too many other companies are in this space with a more direct benefit (e.g. Shopkick). Foursquare just hasn't woken up to the reality that Facebook and Gowalla figured out.

oursquare's focus wasn't on the over blown mass of advertising that is Black Friday, they focused on Small Business Saturday and a partnership with American Express that is testing into some things that will eliminate the reason why the midwest isn't using foursquare -> checkins are unnatural behaviors. Without going into details, the folks that I spoke with at American Express were really excited about the results. Your rant is fun, but foursquare is still pretty small with only 10 million people and they're working out the kinks with specials - and the kicker is that it isn't really about the specials, it's about discovery.

The real irony is that this shows how much the new media tools like FourSquare need advertisers, just as the advertisers need them.

There is real power in how big retailers and brands can build awareness for digital tools. Whether it is in-store advertising, integrating digital activity into video and print ads, or using other social media to promote it. We do all of this to build usage of Macy's Backstage Pass and think it is the only way digital advertising will get the scale to have the impact needed.

When the use of tablets and DVRs mean ads in Prime Suspect stop chaninging people's opinions or behaviour, we need to know what will work.

I think this is a compelling piece but it misses the point. Black Friday is all about getting to the big ticket item before anyone else. I agree foursquare could have used much better Black Friday advertising, but the truth is that no one is going to want to spend the 15-30 seconds checking in when they're in a rush. I can't speak for the foursquare iPhone app, but the Android app is quite sluggish at times. If I'm in a big rush, there's no way I'm going to take the time to check in.

Four Square would grow if they created a way to "check in" to websites as well. A similar feature to a facebook "like" or "tweet" button. Allowing users to "check in" to a website will raise the awareness of the network and help people understand the "check in" concept. I would gaurantee that this feature would make their usership skyrocket.

Great post! The under-utilization of Four Square during the most important shopping day of the holidays (and now the most record breaking) is borderline criminal. I agree that they severely dropped the ball on this opportunity. I live in NY, and usually use 4Sq. I was down south during Thanksgiving weekend and not once did it dawn upon me to check into a location for a deal.

sidenote: you have a few typos and errors in this piece:

1. In the first paragraph it should read "the reigning king of retail"--it currently reads "reigning kind..."
2. In the third para, "nearly" was typed twice
3. In the same sentence as the above it should read "not even"--it currently reads "not event"
