<description><![CDATA[I wonder if Penguin (or Panda for that matter) could help me market my book, RadioEYES: Great Rock Lyrics Set to Art. 
The book contains the licensed lyrics to 50 great rock and roll songs, each one interpreted by a famous illustrator. 
The songwriters are people like Paul Simon, John Lennon, Elton John, Frank Zappa, James Taylor and Stevie Wonder among others.
The illustrators are people like Brad Holland, Braldt Bralds, Victor Moscoso, the late John Alvin, Lou Beach and many others.
The songwriters and their publishers all approved the interpretations of these famous songs.
The book is 30 years old in 2013 and I want to market it. We have a web site: radioeyes.net
If anyone has any ideas on this, please let me know.
These works are too fine not to be acknowledged anew.

Having been a content publicist since before Google existed, I can confidently tell you that Google&#039;s results HAVE ALWAYS BEEN the result of a feedback loop. Google is simply improving its ability to calibrate the signal:noise ratio within that loop. Signal evaluation is an ongoing process that will never end. And just because Google no longer rewards (all) low value content with high rankings does not mean all high value content will ascend to position one by default. There will always be a need for people to help with outreach on behalf of high caliber content. People don&#039;t trip over URLs, and if they do, and they click them and find them useful, it&#039;s because a curator/sharer helped usher that process along. I&#039;ve been helping content publishers for years to do this, and I am not an SEO. <description><![CDATA[What a great and timely article! Not sure that all of you commentators really get the point Yaron is making. And yes that includes Martin Sandborn despite his rather generous contribution and obvious knowledge about PageRank :-) 

What you&#039;re missing is that regardless of whether it was in PageRank, Panda or Penguin, Google is changing the rules and the change is to the benefit of content publishers. 

Whereas beforehand getting noticed relied on SEO wizardry and filling pages with back links and keywords thanks to these recent updates we are getting closer to an internet where content only needs to be fresh and worth reading to feature high in SERPs.

Yaron is therefore correct, the recent updates will put publishers back in the driving seat as it puts the focus on how often content is updated, how long a visitor spends on a site reading it, how many times is it shared across social, and how many people return to the search results a second after arriving etc etc.

Carl Kravetz definitely has a point relating to the subjective nature of content quality as its true that &quot;we are what we consume&quot; vis-a-vis his comment about &quot;All Hail the Kardashians.&quot; However, this is not dumbing down the internet, its just exposing the moronic z-list-celebrity-obsessed culture our wonderful TV networks have been filling the airwaves with for far too long.

This is good news for those who publish content worth reading and bad news for those who think they should be able to buy things like traffic and clicks...so a step in the right direction methinks.

The conclusion of the opinion piece is that these are &quot;great days for publishing&quot; the writer is &quot;very optimistic about future.&quot; Why?

&quot;Google&#039;s results are now the result of a feedback loop.&quot; Wait. That&#039;s what Google&#039;s patented PageRank algorithm has been all along. Nothing new there. Sites with links from authoritative sites get better placement on search engine results pages and more authority, which drives those sites they link to higher on the results page. That&#039;s how the SEO link-buying game has been played for years -- learn to play the feeback loop. It&#039;s not been a game of stuffing keywords onto pages for more than a decade.

Panda and Penguin had little to do with social media metrics. Panda involved development of artificial intelligence that emulated human editors appraisal of content. Penguin as spammers euphemistically refer to the Google&#039;s &quot;Web Spam Algorithm Update&quot; slightly improved Google&#039;s ability to detect artificial backlinks. Read the SEO literature. It trimmed a few of the less savvy link buyers but SERP placement for highly competitive search terms in high-yield economic sectors continue to be dominated by companies that pay for links -- even a year ofter NYT exposed J.C. Pennys&#039; google penalization for exactly that very practice. 

Social media can be gamed just was easily as can link profiling. Off-shore workers can build numbers-based social media profiles faster than Googles engineers can write algorithms to detect them.

While this article&#039;s headline writer deigned to promise copy about how the Penguin update will improve publishing, the only &quot;how&quot; we got was a reiteration of Google&#039;s core technology - the PageRank algorithm. Instead we were served a trendy &quot;what to do&quot; piece behind an syrupy conclusion that things are getting better. &quot;What to do&quot; was essentially to abandon search placement as a goal, in hopes of improving search placement. Focus on &quot;discovery&quot; of our content, we&#039;re told.

That&#039;s not even Social Media 101. Social media marketing doesn&#039;t depend on passive discovery - it depends on engagement. The nod to social media reflect in part the future of search which is in a state of flux as the technology emerges from larvae stage. Human editors will have an increasing role in training machine learning, as they did with Panda. High PR sites like DMOZ and Yahoo - which are human edited sites -- will continue to be an important factor in search placement. Increase in processing power and memory capacity will drive enhanced algorithms that learn human psychological factors and natural-language culturally-oriented semantics algorithms. We publishers will still be left with a question -- what is &quot;Quality&quot; content in the current context?]]></description>

It will punish publishers of authoritative content (like health and medical information) that is NOT trendy, gossipy and prone to be shared. With this new release, Google is contributing to the dumbing-down of web content.
