Apologies for the pricing error. Regardless, of the "features" offered for a paid subscription listed at http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/join the non online gaming consumer is paying twice. If MS include what consumers already pay for i.e, hbogo, netflix, hulu plus in their free portion and heavily promote, I still believe they'll gain a large number of new non gaming users who will tap into their kid's xboxes to access all the above content, take advantage of some great services, get entrenched in the ms ecosystem, get exposure to the Windows 8 OS and give Microsoft a little bit of a market share boost.

If they give away XBox Live subscriptions for free (but charge for MMO access), they'd have a better chance of growing market share with consumers and taking advantage of their "trojan horse". No one (myself included) wants to add on $14.95/month to what they already pay for their ISP, netflix, hulu plus, cable, etc. An IP tv, bluray player, apple tv, etc. all connect your tv to the web and many great apps--without having to pay another subscription fee. Mind you Apple TV is Apple's first step into including the TV into their ecosystem. MS could easily do the same by charging only for multi player access and giving away normal web access and apps like the aforementioned options. The XBox 360 interface is very nice, clean and intuitive and a great tie in to Windows 8 but it's not worth $14.95/month for someone who is not a heavy gamer. IMHO a small change to their service fee structure with a huge promotional push and their user base will grow exponentially.

To paraphrase Gates from *many, many* years ago, "Our goal is world domination."

Not only is this not news, it's been in their plan from the beginning. MSFT has always been focused on finding a way to get their OS in "every room in the house". And that's much closer to a direct quote.

While some in the "business" have been snoozing at the wheel, Copeland, they rolled out the new interface about two years ago for their Xbox. Next was Win Mobile 7, which looked suspiciously like...get ready...the Xbox interface. Then - and you might want to sit down for this one - out pops W8! Lordy, it looks like the other two! How could that be?

Not only did this take two-plus years to roll out in the marketplace, it took several years before that to develop, and it was all in the context of a cohesive, homogeneous UI/UE. Which means, before they keyed one character of code, they had their plan firmly in place.

Keep an eye on Google's Android/Chrome OS efforts and you'll see the same thing happening. And we all already know Apple's done the same. Gee, Amazon got it, too! Getting a consumer to marry your ecosystem - the only way to keep someone for the long term these days - is they holy grail of customer loyalty.

But it's not news.
