Hi, black guy here. This was hilarious and there's nothing racist at all about this clip. It's a "parody!" People are so touchy these days. It's just comedy, enjoy it for what it is a move on.

I thought the piece was great. hilarious. it's starbucks in nyc. much like a lot of the parodies SNL has done through the years. the black dude was authentic - i'd like for the black character to actually be a black artist, for authenticity. but i believe it's ok to enjoy each other's culture. @edkishinevsky

It didn't occur to me that the voices were "black" at first (honestly). I actually thought the humor in it was that the actors are playing Bad Fast Food People. That is the big brand issue here: Starbucks staff often don't come across as barista experts, and the place is often not coffee shop cool. It made me think of the Starbucks shops in airports, in particular.

No, please! This can't be controversial. Why is this a race issue? The two voices just vibe well together, so what if they happen to be African American. Trying too hard to be politically correct (so no one EVER gets offended) is over the top and is making things so contrived and fake. People seem to be looking for hidden motives where there aren't any. There are enough serious issues to get fired up about, this is not one of them.

I thought the ad was OK, humor-wise, but as soon as it was over, you knew it was going to cause this kind of social stir.

The main question's got to be why did they choose to go with two obviously African-American voices, when there are obviously plenty of other snotty barista stereotypes to sling around, and this kind of blowback is 100% predictable? I can really see two likely answers. Either (a) they really are racially tone-deaf -- which is completely believable -- or (b) they thought that by using these voices, that they were adding a layer of clever commentary on race / class relations in Starbucks...and just did it badly.

Personally, I'm guessing the latter, but that's really just because that's what I imagine in my head that the staff of 30 Rock would do.

everything seems racist these days... soon saying "african american" will be racist. If this was a skit on BET, the person would've been african american and the voice's accent would've been white or gay... oh no but if a black guy does it, no ... it's not racist.

Of course it's racist (and a bummer as such)...
but nobody cares because comics can do whatever they want.
and SNL sucks because relying on racism (and homophobia) is SO old and not even funny….anymore….but SNL is not talented enough to know this….anymore.

When a parody hits too close to home, the weak minded cowards of political correctness label it as racism. If you take a close look, white males are truly the brunt of almost every joke in today's commercials... and really, so what. Anyone who calls this SNL skit racist IS a part of the problem here in America. As a Polish Italian from New Jersey, I say LIGHTEN UP, people.

It is funny in spite of classist and mild racist overtones. Maybe a faux pas given that it's MLK day today, but it doesn't really matter who they characterize as the Starbucks staff, the result would be the same. I think black people mocking effete upper-class-wannabe white people are funny.

Yeah, lighten up.

Seriously? This is controversial? No.. that idiot lunatic on Piers Morgan is controversial. This is just funny... if you have been to a Starbucks enough this has happened to you.... regardless of the race of the person behind the counter... I get more attitude from the hippie Caucasian artist types all the time... its as though I am supposed to know what I want in a nanosecond and there should be no delay... any delay in the ordering process is sure to get you an evil stare or a nice emphatic body shift or sigh of stress....

I still think the person at Starbucks that came up with the sizes is a total douche bag...
