<description><![CDATA[I understand the web designer&#039;s frustration, but this is a bit extreme. If the deadbeat is a deadbeat than he/she will eventually run his/her business into the ground through his/her own doing. It&#039;s not a web designer&#039;s job to do that. It&#039;s also bad for business on the designer&#039;s part - I don&#039;t see him getting any enthusiastic clients from this. He&#039;s shown that he&#039;s willing to go to great lengths to damage someone&#039;s reputation - that&#039;s not someone I&#039;d want to work with.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[Why farm this work off-shore? San Francisco is mecca for web-designers so you&#039;d assume there was ample talent locally who would do the work. I personally would want to meet face to face with the entity that is in charge of designing/creating my company&#039;s online identity so they may learn about our company. I&#039;m wondering if the intention was to not pay for the work all-along? I mean, fitness clubs have had a rather dubious reputation for not fulfilling member contracts. Either way it&#039;s puzzling.]]></description>

You mention that you wouldn&#039;t deface a client&#039;s platform... but it doesn&#039;t belong to the client until they pay for it. Until the creative is paid for, it belongs to the designer, not the client.

As for a morally lose/lose situation, again I humbly disagree. I&#039;ve run into a number of deadbeat clients in my past who have tried to stiff me. They&#039;ve all eventually gone out of business because their slimy business ethics didn&#039;t end with stiffing the designer. There is nothing immoral about calling out and humiliating a deadbeat, IMO.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[As an independently contracted web and graphic designer I have found that clients no matter big or small feel they can mistake your status without a company for inexperience rather than understanding that it is one of the fastest growing professions in the country (causing over saturation). I do, however, disagree with his methods as holding websites hostage and publicly scolding their clients will not make future clients confident in his work. At the same time it gives the rest of the freelance world another mark on their already pocked image.

I would strongly suggest that instead of doing this in the future designers build in a pay model into their templates that require credit card auto-pay or some sort of firewall system that takes their site down should payment not be received. Simply replacing it with an &quot;under construction&quot; page. 

Just a thought.]]></description>

While I believe an unpaid web designer would (and probably should) do such a thing, I don&#039;t believe the person who wrote all that was really an unpaid web designer. The accusations are just too vague, and no one who lives in Europe refers to it as Europe -- that&#039;s an American thing. My guess is this is a hacker who is just trying to stir up trouble and see how far it will go.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[As a freelancer, I totally understand the frustration. Clients come to you with emergency deadlines, you drop everything and save the day. Then they pay you in a month or two. Seems like if you are willing to drop everything and save the day, the payment should come a little quicker. That said, I would never do what this guy did. Mostly because it would make ME look bad in the eyes of other potential clients. I take great pride in my work and client relationships, http://www.lutzcreativegroup.com, and while the Fitness place is in he wrong for not paying, there are other avenues that should be taken to receive payment without announcing to the world your frustrations.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[@Karen Linderman. I&#039;d agree with you in almost all cases, but this man has the Internet on his side, and his work and design skills are up there and are very unique. Personally I would never deface a client&#039;s platform and use it as my soapbox but for all we know this is a high school/college kid who&#039;s still young and reckless.

I wouldn&#039;t be surprised if he got some good business out of this at the end of the day from all the publicity, and Fitness SF lost a significant amount of clients--unless they have a very good explanation. They certainly have more to lose than this young designer out of Germany, and fruitful legal action is unlikely.

Morally this is a lose-lose situation, really, but we as marketers can still learn from this incident. We should be fascinated with the virality of this and the mass reach of social media when all the right factors are in place. Everything from the Reddit homepage to this client&#039;s Yelp page are inundated with negative comments and it seems the entire creative world is living vicariously through this young web designer.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[They may get paid from this stunt and a few laughs, but in the client / agency world the agency always loses. It is the harsh and severely unfair working relationship where clients always demand and expect the world, but don&#039;t want to be charged for it. It is a slippery slope, because you start out with a scope of work and an estimate, but then along the way it turns into something much different and the agency is usually the loser, unless the process and costs are managed carefully along the way. I&#039;m not sure that will ever change. &quot;I want the filet mignon but I want to pay for the kid&#039;s sized burger and fries&quot; said the client matter-of-factly.]]></description>
