What TVGuide.com Watchlist Data Reveals About the Season's New Dramas

Since last summer Ad Age has had an editorial partnership with TVGuide.com focused on its Watchlist, a customizable entertainment guide that lets users make a list of their favorite shows, actors, etc. We're interested in Watchlist because, thanks to the power of crowdsourcing, it has predictive powers: For several of the past TV seasons, 8 of the Top 10 most Watchlist-ed new shows were picked up for full seasons -- including last fall.

We think of the Watchlist community as a massive focus group of informed and committed TV viewers. When we started this partnership, the number of Watchlists created by TVGuide.com visitors and users of the TVGuide.com mobile apps had just topped half a million; today, the total is 1.1 million.

The chart shown here lists the 10 most-added new fall dramas announced during the upfronts. So keep in mind that Watchlist users are, essentially, publicly expressing hope -- that these shows will live up to hype (or at least be as good as their trailers) -- as well as an intent to watch. As TVGuide.com Editor-in-Chief Mickey O'Connor explains: "Before viewers are able to learn every nuance of every new show, they latch on to the familiar -- whether it be an actor, the source material or even the production company. That's what we're seeing at this stage of the game on the list of new fall shows most added to Watchlists."

Here's how the latest round of upfront pitches played out.

Best Ambiance: AMC. In an approach resembling an amusement park fun house, the network recreated the "Breaking Bad" meth lab, complete with rock candy to resemble that show's distinctive "blue meth," and had lurking zombies give buyers chills over missing out on "The Walking Dead" -- or having to pay up for it.

Worst hashtag: #NBCFall, which was easy to mistake for the very critical hashtag going around last summer during NBC's Olympic coverage -- #NBCFail.

"We think the shift from ad-supported viewing to Netflix had a negative impact of $500 million on total advertising during the quarter," UBS analyst John Janedis wrote in a research note in April.

With competition from cable and the web growing, broadcasters are leaning more on past successes and big names to find fresh hits.

NBC is reviving "Ironside," a hit police drama from almost 50 years ago. Fox is bringing back Kiefer Sutherland in "24" after three years on the shelf and ABC is anchoring a night of new shows with a spin-off from parent Walt Disney Co.'s "Avengers" movie. Shows based on "Dracula," "Alice in Wonderland" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" are also on network schedules.

Known concepts with big-name actors are a proven way to grab viewers, said Neal Baer, exec producer of NBC's "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" for 11 years. A star's name can make a show stand out early on, providing comfort to programmers without necessarily boosting costs that can run as high as $4 million for a single hour of TV.

One came out juggling while riding a tricycle, another emerged breakdancing and a third back-flipped out onto the stage.

Comedian Will Ferrell later introduced himself in a video as the head of Turner, since "Funny or Die bought Turner Broadcasting in a deal that rocked the industry." In reality it was Turner who was the buyer of Funny or Die -- and only of a minority stake at that -- in a deal announced at least year's upfront.

The showdown will be produced in association with Ryan Seacrest Productions in the "American Idol" producer's first foray into Spanish-language programming.

Telemundo, part of Comcast-owned NBC Universal, is also creating Miss Latina USA, a combination reality show and beauty pageant whose winner will go on to compete in the Miss Universe pageant. This will be the first time another U.S. contestant in addition to the official Miss USA pageant winner will be part of the Miss Universe competition. But fading ratings for the comeptition series undoubtedly also played a role.

With no "DWTS" results show on Tuesday, ABC is scheduling the much-hyped Joss Whedon "Avengers" spin-off "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." at 8 p.m., to be followed by fellow new entries "The Goldberg's," "Trophy Wife" and "Lucky 7."

ESPN used its upfront on Tuesday to suggest, essentially, that advertisers don't need to worry about time-shifted viewing -- because sports still gets audiences to watch live.

"There's no genre performing better than sports in this fragmented, cluttered marketplace," said Ed Erhardt, president of ESPN's global customer marketing and sales, at the network's event at the Best Buy Theater in Times Square.

In other highlights:

While the peacock network started off last season strong, buoyed by "Sunday Night Football" and "The Voice," ratings fell off mid-season after both went on hiatus. In a first for broadcast, Univision topped NBC in February sweeps.

NBC had few new hits coming out of last year's upfront -- namely "Revolution" and "Chicago Fire." Last week, NBC axed a swath of its other new entries, including comedies "Go On," "The New Normal" and "1600 Penn" and the drama "Deception." It also canceled "Smash," the lavish musical series that just finished its second season.

Fox will stagger premieres throughout the year, he said, attempting to break the perception that premieres can only come in September and January and that summer is a dead zone for scripted TV.

To that end, a 12-episode run of "24," starring Keifer Sutherland, will likely premiere next May and run through the summer. Fox is also introducing a second limited series, "Wayward Pines," a thriller from M. Night Shymalan that will also debut next year.
