NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- The flap over Self magazine's heavily retouched photo of singer Kelly Clarkson for a recent cover flared anew at last week's Women at NBCU breakfast. The event kicked off the network's new advertising sales initiative around health issues. Dr. Nancy Snyderman, moderator and chief media editor at NBC News, opened a panel discussion by highlighting the national problem of body image, anorexia and bulimia among young women. Self editor in chief and panel member Lucy Danziger defended her publication's controversial image enhancement.

I shot coffee through my nostrils when Ms. Danziger used the expression "if we're being honest..."
I was disappointed that nobody called her to task for her evasive or answers by pointing out, for example, that the title of the magazine is "SELF."
Apparently this does not refer to one's actual self, but the manufactured one that is will sell magazines. The problem again is, that they never test the theory that only by sheering off two-thirds of someone's ass will the covers sell.

I'm not only a Photoshop expert, but I'm also a guy that happens to think that women with curves are better looking than anorexic cover models. I only wish that Kelly Clarkson would stand behind her 'real' self. She's very attractive and her confidence and personal stance about body image only make her more attractive.

If Ms. Danziger's statement regarding Ms. Clarkson's approval of the final image is true, then the problem will continue to be SELF-perpetuating.
