Hardee's shifted its $80 million account to Mendelsohn/Zien, Los Angeles, from Cliff Freeman & Partners in New York. It is the 10th such move by the fast-food chain in nine years.

Randy Van Kleek and Nelson Martinez, the CDs behind Y&R's Sony Walkman campaign and Deutsch's Domino's Pizza spots, have opened a small New York shop, Union, that will specialize in developing TV shows and branded entertainment.

In January, New York's Lowe Lintas & Partners will drop the "Lintas" from its name. For trivia buffs, Lintas is an acronym derived from Lever International Advertising Services.

Fallon Worldwide announced plans to expand into Hong Kong, Singapore and Sao Paulo, Brazil. Fallon's chairman, Pat Fallon, acknowledges the business climate is difficult but says the expansion is necessary to service such clients as United Airlines and Timberland.

DDB/New York elevated creative director John Staffen to ECD, filling a role that's been vacant for almost a year, since co-executive CDs David Nathanson and Steve Landsberg left in the summer of 2000. Staffen was instrumental in helping DDB win back the New York State Lottery account earlier this year.

Bozell/New York won the $10 million Finlandia vodka account, beating out Arnold Worldwide and Lowe Lintas & Partners.

Temerlin McClain, Irving, Texas, cut 75 employees following a sharp drop in ad spending by American Airlines. It is the agency's third cutback this year.

Boston-based Holland Mark Advertising has closed after 15 years as an independent agency. Clients included The Boston Globe, Yankee Candle Co., Mallon Financial Corp., Dreyfus Corp. and Veryfine Products' juice line.
