Though it may have an unprepossessing cover, Coast to Coast: Contemporary American Graphic Design, is brimming with offbeat eye candy that owes as much to comix as it does to commercialism. Billed as "the first publication to condense decades of influence, lifestyles and an entire generation of U.S. graphic designers into a compact yet comprehensive collection," the $55 hardcover, from Die Gestalten Verlag, Berlin, is divided into five broad sections: Deconstructive Typography, Urban Art, the Digital Realm, Rock Style and American Retro. As editor Ken Coupland says in his preface, "This is design based in free association that thrives on the transgressive, mysterious, counter-intuitive impulses that fester in the underbelly of mainstream culture." Seen here: one of the more sedate Rock Style posters by the inimitable Coop.
