Colombia's Got Our Back

South American Friends Say Try Optimism

The economic news in the U.S. and elsewhere is horrific, but Colombia is here to tell us that if it can come back from the brink, so can you. A basket case of a country for decades, Colombia is now thriving. In fact, it should be a brand of hope, says Colombian-born Juan Carlos Ortiz, president of DDB Latin America. Mr. Ortiz said he has enlisted 10 major Colombian companies, some of which operate in the U.S. or plan to, to back a TV and digital campaign to break in the U.S. next year and present Colombia in a new light.

"We survived a real crisis, and there's a national 'We can do it' spirit now about doing things and moving forward," Mr. Ortiz said. He's gotten the green light from Colombia's president, Alvaro Uribe, who is enjoying immense popularity in Colombia after battling Marxist rebels and drug traffickers.
