VW Spokesman Says No on Thompson Rumors

The grapevine is swirling that Jan Thompson, who left Nissan North America unexpectedly as VP-marketing communications last month, is a contender for Volkswagen of America's new CMO post.

A VW spokesman said Jan's name "isn't a name that's come up internally" although he admitted the powers that be "haven't told us who they have talked to" for the job that would replace Kerri Martin, who left in January.

Thompson could not be reached for comment.

The spokesman also addressed industry rumblings that DDB, New York, which was given its termination notice by Subaru last week, can finally get back VW's U.S. account, which it lost in 1994. "I don't see that happening right now," the VW spokesman said, since the automaker still has a three-year contract with Crispin Porter & Bogusky. The agency, brought in by Ms. Martin, is "hot and heavy developing work for next year," he said.

DDB has VW in 20-plus other countries globally.
