Decision Expected Next Week

SAN FRANCISCO (AdAge.com) -- They have named a new team manager, so now Major League Baseball's Oakland Athletics are taking pitches to see which agency will lead its advertising resources.

The A's have heard presentations from eight agencies for their advertising account, according to executives familiar with the situation.

The competitors
They include: Omnicom Group shops Goodby, Silverstein & Partners and TBWA/Chiat/Day, both San Francisco, independent Wieden & Kennedy, Portland, Ore.; and the incumbent, Interpublic Group of Cos.' Foote, Cone & Belding Worldwide, San Francisco.

One particularly interested party is Goodby Silverstein's co-chairman Jeff Goodby, an A's fan. He and Mr. Silverstein launched their careers creating the baseball team's famous "Billy Ball" campaign while working at WPP Group's Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide in the 1980s.

A decision is expected next week. A's executives did not return calls.
