NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- Troubled conglomerate Tyco International has selected an advertising agency to help develop and build its communications programs, both internal and external, according to executives familiar with the matter.

Interpublic Group of Cos.' Hill Holliday Connors Cosmopulos, Boston, won the account over Omnicom Group's DDB Worldwide and TBWA/Chiat/Day, both New York; as well as WPP Group's Y&R Advertising, New York. The review began in March.

Declined comment
A Tyco spokesman declined to comment on its discussions with agencies.

According to TNS Media Intelligence/CMR, Tyco International spent $1.1 million on corporate advertising in 2002.

Executives said the scope of work is expected to begin with internal communications within Tyco's various holdings, which include fiber-optic cable suppliers and medical instrument manufacturers, and expand later. The company has been reeling from scandals surrounding the activities of former CEO Dennis Kozlowski and other top executives uncovered nearly one year ago.
