Stand Back!

American households spend more than $420 million a year on fireworks, according to the Consumer Expenditure Survey. And that figure doesn't even include the amount of money private and government organizations shell out for public shows. Among private citizens, older Americans - those age 75 and up - are 209 percent more likely than average to spend on backyard pyrotechnics. No surprise then that they claim 29 percent of the firework market share. But keep in mind: safety first. The National Council on Fireworks Safety says that nearly 7,000 people were treated for firework-related injuries in 1998. Looking for the best fireworks displays in the country? The top two ZIP codes for firework spending - in Queens and Manhattan - are both in New York City. Like there's not enough noise echoing through the concrete canyons as it is!
