Access Intelligence makes health care acquisition, cuts jobs

Rockville, Md.—Access Intelligence announced it has acquired Contexo Media, a health care information provider that serves the medical billing industry.

The move is part of Access’ aggressive effort to become more reliant on paid content and less reliant on advertising. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Contexo produces books, software, online tools, newsletters, educational workshops and conferences. It also serves the medical case manager market through its Dorland Health division, which publishes Case in Point.

Access said the deal furthers its “strategic plan to invest in high-value subscription information products and services in well-defined strategic markets.” Contexo will be overseen by Heather Farley, president of Access’ business information group. Jerry Okabe, formerly head of circulation at Penton Media, will run the coding portion of the Contexo unit.

As it was finalizing the acquisition, Access cut about 20 positions last week, many of them associated with print, the company confirmed. Additionally, Access confirmed that Paul McPherson, who had been chief of its business media group, has left the company.
