Allstate to challenge direct sales channel

Allstate Corp. plans to introduce direct sales of insurance policies through the Internet, challenging its direct sales force of 15,000 agents. The company will introduce the system for sales of auto insurance in Oregon, followed by a state-by-state rollout of similar services. The move is part of a restructuring of the company that started last year. Allstate, Northbrook, Ill., said it would not discount policies purchased on the Internet, and challenged its agents to provide a level of customer service superior to an online application.
