Data miner SAS launches medical marketplace

Data warehousing vendor SAS Institute, Cary, N.C., today spun off its first b-to-b company. iBiomatics L.L.C., a wholly owned subsidiary of SAS, is a b-to-b marketplace that will help researchers at pharmaceutical companies shorten development times and reduce research and development costs. SAS believes that the information-rich biotechnology industry is primed for a data-rich e-marketplace site. Pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries worldwide spent more than $43 billion on research and development in 1999, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers.
