Direct marketing industry sitting pretty

San Francisco—The direct marketing industry will tally $1.939 trillion in sales this year, a 7.4% increase compared with last year, Direct Marketing Association President-CEO John A. Greco Jr. said Monday in his opening speech at DMA06, the association’s annual conference.

“Direct marketing-driven sales now make up 10.3% of the GDP,” Greco said.

Marketers across many industries are beginning to recognize the power of direct marketing, once considered a niche marketing tactic, Greco said.

“There’s something significant taking place in the practice of marketing,” he said. “They [marketers] are coming in our direction.”

The DMA Monday announced it has elected a new slate of board members, including Markus Wilhelm, CEO of Bookspan, as chairman. Wilhelm was vice chairman in 2006. He succeeds Meredith Corp. President-CEO Stephen M. Lacy. American List Counsel Chairman-President Donn Rappaport became vice chairman; American Institute for Cancer Research Exec VP-COO Kelly B. Browning became treasurer; and Pitney Bowes CMO Arun Sinha was named secretary.
