Gartner, Census surveys bullish on b-to-b

The Census Bureau took its first stab at measuring e-commerce activity in its report, "Measuring the Electronic Economy." Notably, the report showed that b-to-b deals accounted for more than 90% of all online sales in 1999.

Industries scoring high b-to-b usage were transportation equipment, with 20.8% of all shipments in 1999 being ordered electronically, and electrical equipment (19.8%). Laggards included petroleum (3.9%) and beverages and tobacco (8.4%).

John Ferreira, co-leader of the b-to-b practice at Deloitte Consulting L.L.C., questioned the value of the Census report, saying the newly released findings weren't up-to-date enough to be of use.
