Google retains large lead in share of search market

Reston, Va.—Google again leads the pack, accounting for almost half of all searches conducted in the U.S. in January, according to comScore Networks, an online measurement firm. Google was also the only one of the top four engines to gain share year over year.

In January, Google sites captured 47.5% of the U.S. search market, gaining 6.1 share points compared with the year earlier period. Yahoo sites maintained second place, with 28.1%, followed by Microsoft sites (10.6%), Ask Network (5.2%) and Time Warner Network (5.0%).

In terms of number of searches performed, Google sites led with 3.3 billion, followed by Yahoo (1.9 billion), Microsoft (733 million), Ask Network (361 million) and Time Warner Network (342 million).
