Hewlett-Packard to cut 6,000 jobs

San Francisco--Hewlett-Packard Co. said it would cut 6,000 jobs, or 6.5% of its work force, and warned of lower-than-expected third-quarter revenue due to a slowing worldwide economy. The computer maker said the cuts would take place mostly in the fourth quarter and would achieve $500 million in savings annually. HP's stock closed at $24, down from Wednesday's close of $25.68.
