New York—Internet ad revenue totaled $5.5 billion in the first quarter, down 5% from the same period last year, according to a report from the Interactive Advertising Bureau and Pricewaterhouse Coopers.

The decrease is the first year-over-year decline in Internet ad revenue since 2002, following the dot-com crash.

“We’re confident that growth will resume as the U.S. economic climate improves,” said Randall Rothenberg, president-CEO of the IAB.

“Interactive advertising is the most accountable way to reach consumers-and in this economy, digital media will be a core component of any successful marketing campaign.”
