IBM, EMC enter alliance

Armonk, N.Y. -- In the alliance-happy computer industry, IBM Corp. and EMC Corp., Hopkinton, Mass., announced a five-year alliance valued at $3 billion. Under the alliance, EMC Corp. will continue to purchase IBM disk drives for incorporation into its data storage systems. The alliance also provides for a broad patent cross-license between the two companies for storage and other technologies. IBM earlier announced a $16 billion technology pact with Dell Computer Corp., Round Rock, Texas.
