‘Industrial Equipment News’ gains new life

Philadelphia—IEN lives.

Three former publishing professionals associated with Industrial Equipment News, a title that Thomas Publishing shut down with the May issue, have licensed the publication and plan to begin publishing it again in September.

The print publication will have a reduced annual frequency of six times. The three partners—Todd Baker, Thomas’ former director of product news development; Ciro Buttacavoli, former IEN publisher; and Cal Calhoun, former IEN independent rep—also plan to relaunch a revamped IEN Web site in June.

While acknowledging the decline of IEN print revenue, Baker said the brand’s online revenue had increased and was on track to continue growing this year before the title was shut down. Without the overhead of a large publishing company, Baker said, the brand could be profitable.

“Large publishing companies can’t shed their fixed costs fast enough,” Baker said. “What they would love to do is get rid of the furniture and all of the other legacy costs.”
