Name: Charles Richard Title: VP-new business and client services Company: The Jordan, Edmiston Group Inc., New York Goal: "To further enhance JEGI’s relationships within the b-to-b sector."
During his four years as VP-strategic planning at Cahners Business Information, Charles Richard cut 31 mergers and acquisitions valued at more than a $1 billion, including Cahners' purchase last year of the CMD Group (formerly Construction Market Data Group) for $300 million.

Still, Richard, who holds a Ph.D. in quantitative business analysis from the University of Washington, was eager to get involved in all aspects of brokering big deals—and not just the sale and purchase. That's a luxury at a large organization such as Cahners but not so at The Jordan,

Edmiston Group Inc., the 18-person M&A boutique Richard recently joined as VP-new business and client services.

Despite the whiff of recession, companies are still very much in the market for acquisitions, Richard said. "But the perception has to shift about the economy."

In the first two months of this year there were 13 magazine deals valued at $528 million, a 25% increase in value from the 25 magazine deals during the same period last year valued at $421 million, Richard said. Among the markets he's keeping his eye on this year are advertising, technology and a broad spectrum of information businesses.
