New York—Magazine launches in the first quarter totaled 25, down from 110 in the first quarter of 2009, according to data released Monday by MediaFinder.com, an online database of publications. Magazine closures also slowed, with 22 titles folding in this year’s first quarter compared with 95 in the year-earlier period.
Seven magazine converted from print to online-only in the first quarter, compared with 16 in the first quarter of 2009.
“We are encouraged to see the slowdown in ceased publications, with only 22 folding this quarter. With 25 new magazine launches, including a luxury wedding magazine, Weddings Illustrated; a food magazine, Deen Bros. Good Cooking; and a luxury magazine for professional athletes, Athletes Quarterly, new launches outpaced magazine closures,” Trish Hagood, president of MediaFinder.com, said in a statement.
