Alic succeeds Krakoff as Advanstar chairman

Advanstar Communications announced James M. Alic has been named to succeed Robert L. Krakoff as chairman of the company's board of directors. Alic had served as vice chairman since July 1996. Before joining Advanstar, he was VP-corporate controller at IBM Corp. and served as chairman-CEO of Reed Exhibition Cos. Advanstar announced July 30 that Krakoff would be retiring the following day.

Former Penton Media CEO Kemp joins Veronis Suhler Stevenson

Tom Kemp, former Penton Media CEO, has been hired by media merchant bank Veronis Suhler Stevenson as a managing director. Kemp was succeeded at Penton on July 1 by David Nussbaum. "We are confident that [Kemp] will be instrumental to the future success of our firm and its significant business-to-business media activities," said John S. Suhler, president and co-CEO of Veronis Suhler Stevenson, in a statement.

CMP chooses Goodman as `Dr. Dobbs' publisher

CMP Media announced that Michael Goodman is the new publisher of Dr. Dobb's Journal, a magazine for software developers. Former Publisher Tim Trickett is leaving CMP after 17 years to "pursue new opportunities." Goodman will report to Peter Westerman, VP-group publisher of software development media at CMP. For Goodman, the new job is a homecoming of sorts: He worked at Dr. Dobb's Journal in the mid-1980s. He comes to the magazine from O'Reilly Media, where he was director of corporate sales.

Forbes names Laschever publisher of `Forbes FYI'

Forbes Magazine Group has named Jack Laschever VP-publisher of Forbes FYI, the company's lifestyle publication. Laschever is a 21-year veteran of the magazine publishing industry, most recently president of Miller Sports Group, which publishes Tennis, Cruising World and Sailing World. Forbes FYI is a quarterly magazine covering lifestyle trends of executives. In 2005 it will boost its frequency to six times a year.
