Newspaper ad spending down in second quarter

Vienna, Va.--Newspaper advertising expenditures for the second quarter totaled $11.1 billion, an 8.4% decrease from the same period last year, according to preliminary estimates released Thursday by the Newspaper Association of America. The numbers are less than surprising considering the soft ad market and the generally weak economy. Retail advertising showed the smallest decline, down 2.2% to $5.3 billion. National advertising fell 8.5% to $1.9 billion, and classified advertising dropped 15.5% to just under $4 billion.
