Newspaper advertising down in Q1

Vienna, Va.--Newspaper ad spending totaled $10.4 billion in the first quarter, dropping 4.3 % from a year earlier, according to preliminary estimates from the Newspaper Association of America. Retail advertising showed the smallest decline, down 0.4 % to $4.6 billion. National advertising was off 3.7 % to $1.75 billion, and classified advertising slid 8.6 % to $4 billion.
