New York—Media measurement company Nielsen plans to acquire radio ratings service Arbitron Inc. for $1.26 billion.
The deal, subject to regulatory review, will unite Nielsen's TV, online video and social measurement capabilities with Arbitron's radio, streaming audio and out-of-home ratings services.
Both companies have been expanding how they measure exposure to various media. Last month, Nielsen acquired
SocialGuide, a start-up that tracks Twitter conversations about TV shows. And Arbitron's new Portable People Meter
captures inaudible program codes within audio broadcasts or streams, to identify station exposure.
