Nielsen details new online ratings system

New York—Nielsen Co. plans to merge online viewing of TV shows into its C3 ratings, which measure commercial viewership.

Nielsen said it would launch its “Extended Screen” service this September, with “evaluation” data released separately from its standard TV data by year’s end.

In February 2011, the evaluation data will cease to be produced, and the standard Nielsen ratings thereafter will include production data of both online and TV viewership.

Last month Nielsen began distributing special measurement meters in 7,500 households to gauge online video viewership.
