Northwest Airlines ties miles to e-mail offers

Eagan, Minn.--Northwest Airlines Corp. has announced a direct marketing program where flyers who register online to receive promotional e-mails can earn up to 1,000 extra miles. The e-mails will tout special offers on last-minute airfares and discount rates to preferred destinations. Northwest's offer reflects recent moves by competitors Delta Air Lines Inc. and UAL Corp. to increase Internet-based marketing efforts amid a business travel slowdown.
