PC sales up slightly, revenues down

Reston, Va. -- While unit sales of Windows-based PCs increased slightly last month when compared with February 1998, price slashing among PC manufacturers caused revenues to plunge 16% over the same period, according to a study released by PC Data, a market research firm. As PCs continue their transformation into commodities, sub-$1,000 PCs continued to dominate the market in February, accounting for 62% of unit sales. The sub-$600 PC market grew 657% over February 1998 and represented nearly 20% of retail PCs.
