Cleveland—Penton Media said it will no longer produce print versions of American Machinist, which has been published continuously since 1877, and Welding Design & Fabrication.
The company has also canceled the 2010 Machine Shop Workshop.
In a memo to staffers, John DiPaolo, VP-group publisher, said the moves were “a direct result of a very difficult economic climate, the impact the recession has had on capital equipment purchases such as machine tools, the consolidation of major companies in the welding market and the print ad page declines we have seen for quite some time in the metalworking and welding market.”
Both American Machinist and Welding Design & Fabrication will continue as online brands, offering e-newsletters, webcasts, video, product demonstrations and calculators, according to the memo.
As a result of the cutbacks, Chuck Bates, managing editor of American Machinist, James Benes, associate editor, and Dan Pels, associate publisher, will leave the company.
