PIB: Ad pages down 11% through August

New York--The softening economy continues to hamper magazine publishing, with ad pages through August down 11% compared with the same period last year, according to the latest figures from the Publishers Information Bureau.Ad revenues through August were off 3% compared with the same period in 2000. In August alone, ad pages were down 12% compared with August 2000 and ad revenue decreased 4%.Sectors that have seen large declines this year include technology, down 35%; and media and advertising, down 29%. The only category to see a large gain was drugs and remedies, up 5%. Business titles continue to bear the brunt of the downturn. For example, ad pages for Business Week fell 35% through August and ad revenue dropped 29%, while ad pages for Fast Company were off 50% and ad revenue was down 31%. Red Herring's ad pages were down 60% and ad revenue fell 49%. Inc., which recently underwent a redesign, saw ad pages fall 52% and ad revenue decrease 45%. http://
