Pitney Bowes to launch cloud-based digital mail platform

Stamford, Conn.—Pitney Bowes, known primarily for its physical direct-mail solutions, is readying the launch of a new service that takes mail delivery into the cloud.

The new Volly service will allow mail recipients to receive, view, organize and manage digitized versions of such content as bills, statements, direct marketing, catalogs and coupons they might otherwise handle as traditional paper mail, according to Pitney Bowes. The service, which also includes online bill payment, will be made available in the U.S. in the second half of this year, the company said in a statement.

The statement continued: Volly will help “service bureaus and high-volume production printers ... expand their offerings to include both physical and digital personalized communications.”

Volly is similar to an existing offering from Zumbox, which began rolling out its own service of scanned and digitally delivered mail more than a year ago. That prompted Pitney Bowes to sue Zumbox in October 2009, claiming the company infringed on Pitney Bowes' technology.

The lawsuit is still pending.
