Postal reform bill clears House committee

Washington, D.C.--The House Committee on Government Reform Wednesday forwarded a postal reform bill to the full House.

"This reform is a long time in coming, and I'm thrilled that we can now see the light at the end of the tunnel," said Rep. John M. McHugh (R-N.Y.), a sponsor of the bill and a longtime champion of postal reform.

The House characterized the bill as "the first major piece of postal reform legislation to head to the House floor in three decades." The House leadership has said the bill will be taken up this summer.

The Senate is circulating a discussion draft of its own postal reform bill, which is expected to be introduced next Tuesday, according to a Senate spokeswoman.
