Primedia eliminates Media Central unit, cuts jobs

New York--Primedia Inc. Thursday eliminated its Media Central business unit, reassigning some of its properties to Primedia Business Magazines & Media and others to Primedia Consumer Magazines & Media, a spokesman for the company confirmed. The Web site will continue in its current format.

Positions in the unit were eliminated in support, sales, administration, production and information technology, the spokesman said. He declined to provide a specific number of eliminated jobs.

American Demographics, Folio:, Circulation Manager, CableWorld and Folio’s events are now part of Primedia Business Magazines & Media. and Simba Information were reassigned to Consumer Magazines & Media.

Primedia characterized the moves as part of its effort to “simplify, focus and execute,” the spokesman said.

The decision was viewed in the industry as a cost-cutting move.

“That makes sense, absorbing those products into units that are already fully costed in terms of overhead,” said Robert Crosland, managing director of AdMedia Partners Inc.
