San Diego—Red Herring’s CMO 2008 conference got under way in San Diego Tuesday with chief marketing officers discussing challenges facing the industry and strategies for success.

New technologies, proving ROI and integrating sales and marketing were some of the hot topics of the day, as more than 200 senior marketers gathered at the summit.

“One of the greatest challenges marketing has going forward is weaving together all of these different functions—product development, sales and marketing communications—into a single marketing message,” said Stephen DiFranco, corporate VP-corporate channels marketing at AMD.

DiFranco presented a case study on how AMD has used partner marketing to compete with chip giant Intel Corp.

Carol Kurimsky, VP-marketing at Ingram Micro, discussed the company’s focus on data analytics and helping its partners prove ROI on marketing investments.

“Our whole goal is to sit in the middle and help everyone build their business,” Kurimsky said. She presented several examples of how Ingram has used data mining to help its partners increase sales.

Other speakers at the event included Clent Richardson, CMO of TiVo (and former CMO of Nortel); Dan Novak, VP-global marketing at Qualcomm; and John Giere, CMO of Alcatel-Lucent.
