RIM introduces BlackBerry Playbook tablet, ad service

San Francisco—In moves aimed at taking on Apple’s iPad, Research in Motion unveiled at BlackBerry DEVCON 2010 a new tablet device and an advertising service for the BlackBerry application platform. The BlackBerry Playbook will be available beginning early next year.

Less than half an inch thick and weighing less than a pound, the PlayBook has 7-inch-high resolution display. The product also has a 1 GHZ dual-core processor, which is designed to support multiprocessing. Unlike Apple devices, the Playbook does support Adobe Flash when Web browsing. It also features dual HD cameras to enable video conferencing and is compatible with BlackBerry smartphones.

The BlackBerry Advertising Service is designed to help developers integrate advertising in their BlackBerry applications with a few lines of code. Developers receive 60% of advertising revenue, according to RIM. The service also allows advertisers, agencies and brands to work with a number of online advertising networks, such as Amobee, Jumptap, Lat49, Millennial Media and Mojiva.
