Smaller publishers say project management is a top hiring priority

La Quinta, Calif.—During a panel discussion on talent management at the American Business Media Spring Meeting, smaller publishers said hiring people with strong project management skills is a top priority.

“The most important thing you can have is someone who is a good communicator and can manage a project from beginning to end,” said David Parsha, VP-interactive platforms at Cygnus Business Media, which publishes more than 60 publications and has about 40 Web sites.

“New interactive applications come out every day. A key skill set is communicating and bringing people together.” Dick Ryan, CEO at ZweigWhite, said project management and industry expertise are extremely important to the engineering and architecture industries that ZweigWhite serves.

“Our clients require someone with deep understanding of their industry. It’s not good enough to let an editor do that,” Ryan said.

Tim Fixmer, president of Statmats Business Media, also said project management is an important skill for new hires.

“For e-media products, you need different tools, different processes and different people. Project management is a huge layer.”
