Steel Coalition launches advertising campaign

Washington--The Steel Coalition launched an advertising campaign Sunday to urge support for the U.S. steel industry. ``The goal of our advertising campaign is to convey our urgent message that illegally dumped foreign steel must be stopped in order to save our domestic steel industry,'' said George Becker, president of the United Steelworkers of America. The campaign urges support for S.395, the ``Stop Illegal Steel Trade Act of 1999,'' introduced by Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., and now pending in the Senate. The bill would impose a three-year quota on steel imports to stabilize the U.S. steel market and set up a monitoring system to prevent illegal dumping. The House of Representatives companion to this bill passed on March 17.
