Study: Direct-marketing hiring shows ups, downs

Owatonna, Minn.—Digital and direct marketers looking for employment shouldn’t expect much change in this year’s fourth quarter, according to the latest employment survey from direct marketing executive search company Bernhart Associates. Although hiring plans are increasing slightly, layoffs and hiring freezes will continue through the end of the year, according to the company.

According to Bernhart’s latest “Quarterly Digital and Direct Marketing Employment Report,” which projects fourth-quarter hiring trends, 41% of surveyed companies said they plan to add staff in the next three months, up from 39% in the third quarter. However, 35% of respondents currently have hiring freezes compared with 23% last quarter, while slightly more companies (8% versus 6%) indicate they plan layoffs this quarter.

Most of the new hiring is within business-to-business companies. It will be the third straight quarter that b-to-b hiring has outpaced b-to-c, Jerry Bernhart, the company’s principal, said.

The Bernhart study was based on an online survey conducted in September and October, with 369 respondents.
