TNS reports ad spending down 14.3% in first half

New York—U.S. ad spending totaled $60.87 billion in the first half, down 14.3% from the first half of last year, according to TNS Media Intelligence. For the second quarter, ad spending was down 13.9% from the year-earlier period.

Only two media categories were up in the first half: Internet advertising (6.5%) and free-standing inserts (4.6%).

All other media categories were down by double-digits, including radio (-24.6%), newspapers (-24.2%), magazines (-20.9%), outdoor (-15.7%) and TV (-10.0%).

Within the magazine category, ad spending in b-to-b magazines was down 26.7%.
