Twitter acquires news aggregator Summify

San Francisco—Twitter has acquired Summify, whose service aggregates news stories for users based on social relevance. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Summify, based in Vancouver, British Columbia, monitors users' own social connections for what's being shared on Facebook, Google Reader and Twitter, and—based on the assumption that these news items also are of interest to the user—delivers a daily digest via email or an iPhone app. Summify said it would be shutting down its service. Neither Twitter nor Summify indicated how or if the technology would be blended into Twitter's existing service.
