Twitter to roll out advertising service

New York—Twitter Tuesday will introduce an ad platform called Promoted Tweets, for which advertisers will pay to have their messages appear as tweets to users.

Twitter COO Dick Costolo announced the service at the Ad Age Digital Conference in New York, produced by BtoB sibling publication Advertising Age.

“We are not in a rush to make a certain amount of money this year,” Costolo said in an interview with Ad Age,. ”We want to get this right. We don't want to force a model on people that is based on incorrect hypotheses.”

Promoted Tweets will appear as regular tweets at the top of certain search results pages. They will be clearly labeled as “promoted” when an advertiser is paying, Twitter said in a blog post.

Initial advertisers for Promoted Tweets include Best Buy, Bravo, Red Bull, Sony Pictures, Starbucks and Virgin America.
