U.K. government abandons b-to-b e-mail regulation plans

In a move that has U.S. b-to-b direct marketers sighing withrelief, a branch of the U.K. government has elected to drop a plan thatwould have had it regulating unsolicited commercial e-mails. Instead, itwill adopt a plan that allows for industry self-regulation. TheLondon-based Department of Trade and Industry's original plan would haverequired b-to-b direct marketers to get permission before sending anye-mail. U.S. b-to-b direct marketers are stepping up their internationalefforts, and U.K. businesses are among their most desired targets.
